Boboi Beach Lodge is the first and best Eco-lodge in the Kartong area.
We started in 1999 and have built a reputation as a fun place to visit, where you can enjoy a wonderful and unspoiled environment and relax in peace and quiet. Boboi Beach Lodge is listed in all the main tourist guides such as Lonely Planet where it called a "Gambian Gem" and highly recommended.Boboi, as its known locally, is set amongst the palm trees where the bush meets the sea, right beside a huge expanse of deserted beach. From the door of your round house to the beach is less than 50 meters. You can sit at the bar in the evening and watch the sun set into the Atlantic. It is a beautiful and unspoiled place and we intend to keep it that way. Boboi Beach Lodge is an eco-tourism project where the emphasis is on providing our guests with a unique African experience where you set the agenda. This website tells you more about Boboi Beach Lodge, that combines relaxation, exploration, and a warm friendly atmosphere.
Boboi is owned by a local entrepreneur
called Mariama Manneh who is married to a Scotsman, David.
We have tried to make Boboi as eco-friendly as possible,
using local building techniques, environmentally-friendly water
management and solar-powered energy. We use organic farming
techniques and use our horses rather than the car (our local
tours are by horse and cart) We work with and train local villagers
and source local produce where possible. The aim of Boboi is
to demonstrate that eco-tourism can work and that the spin-offs
can benefit the local people and economy.
At Boboi we want to promote the language, the
people and the culture and we hope you will join with us in achieving
that aim.
We want you to become a lasting friend of the village and
that we can all learn from each other in the process. For instance
if you are interested in music, language, culture, the visual
arts, birdwatching, fishing or environmental research we really
want to hear from you.
Kartong, the nearest village, is one of the oldest settlements in Gambia, dating back 450 years.
Situated beside the border with Senegal, Kartong is sourrounded by sea, bush, salt flats and a salt water creek. The people of Kartong are mostly Mandinkas but there are many other ethnic groups living together. The people of Kartong make a living from the natural resources which means fishing and farming. Kartong people are friendly and welcoming and will go out of their way to help you. The more you get involved the more you will feel part of the village.
